National Consultation Workshop on Nepal’s Commitment for Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit 2025

A National Consultation Workshop was held in Kathmandu to review Nepal’s commitments to the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit 2021 Tokyo and discuss the draft commitments for the upcoming N4G Summit 2025, scheduled for 27–28 March 2025 in Paris, France.

Objective of the Workshop:

  • Present an overview of the stocktaking and progress review on Nepal’s Commitments to the N4G Summit 2021 Tokyo.
  • Share the draft commitment for the N4G Summit 2025 and gather feedback from sectoral ministries, UN agencies, development partners, and relevant stakeholders.

The workshop was chaired by Honorable Prof. Dr. RP Bichha, Member of the National Planning Commission (NPC), with Honorable Vice-Chairperson of NPC, Prof. Dr. Shivaraj Adhikari, overseeing the program. Hemraj Subedi, Joint Secretary of NPC, welcomed participants and outlined the objectives of the event.

Mr. Raj Kumar Pokharel, SUN-C4N N4G Expert-Nepal, presented the progress review of Nepal’s N4G 2021 commitments and introduced the draft commitment for 2025. The event saw active participation from NPC members, secretaries and joint secretaries from sectoral ministries, representatives from UNICEF, development partners, and other key stakeholders.

Key Discussion Points: Participants provided valuable feedback on the draft commitments, particularly emphasizing:

  • Access to safe drinking water as a critical component.
  • Scaling up multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) to address the high prevalence of anemia among women and children under five.
  • Strengthening exclusive breastfeeding promotion, protection, and support, considering the declining trend.
  • Development of a Food Consumption Survey to strengthen evidence-based policymaking.

Additionally, Honorable Vice-Chairperson Prof. Dr. Shivaraj Adhikari suggested color-coding progress indicators to clearly distinguish between achieved targets, on-track commitments, and areas requiring further effort. Further recommendations included aligning commitments with Multi-Sector Nutrition Plan (MSNP-III) and exploring innovative cross-sectoral approaches beyond health.

Way Forward:

In closing, Prof. Dr. RP Bichha acknowledged the active participation of stakeholders and urged ministries to review the draft commitments and submit official comments and recommendations to the NPC within a week.This workshop marked an important step in refining Nepal’s commitments for the N4G Summit 2025, ensuring a collective and evidence-based approach towards achieving nutrition goals.
